:: Getting Started with Dial-Up Networking

  • Operating System: Windows 95/98
  • Application: Dial-up Networking
Before you begin, Make sure you have your Windows 95/98 CD-ROM or diskettes available and ready for installation.

Install Dial-up Networking
  1. Double-click My Computer on your desktop.
  2. Double-click the Control Panel icon.
  3. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  4. Click the Windows Setup tab.
  5. Click the Communications component.
  6. Click the Details... button.
  7. Put a check in the box next to Dial-Up Networking.
  8. Click the OK button.
  9. Click the OK button again.
  10. Windows 95 will prompt you for your installation diskettes or CD.
  11. Wait for Dial-Up Networking to install.
  12. When you are told to restart, click the OK button.
  13. Click the Start button and choose Shut Down.
  14. Select Restart the computer?
  15. Click the Yes button.
  16. Wait for Windows 95 to restart.

This may take a few minutes.

Add a Dial-up Adapter

  1. Click the Start button point to Settings and choose Control Panel.
  2. Click the Network icon.
  3. Select the Configuration tab.
  4. Click the Add button.
  5. Select Adapter.
  6. Click the Add button.
  7. From the Manufactures: list, choose Microsoft.
  8. From the Network Adapters: list, choose Dial-up Adapter.
  9. Click the OK button.
Add TCP/IP
  1. Click the Start button point to Settings and choose Control Panel.
  2. Click the Network icon.
  3. Select the Configuration tab.
  4. Click the Add button.
  5. Select Protocol.
  6. Click the Add button.
  7. From the Manufactures: list, choose Microsoft.
  8. From the Network Protocol: list, choose TCP/IP.
  9. Click the OK button.
Add Client for Microsoft Networks
  1. Click the Add button.
  2. Select Client.
  3. Click the Add button.
  4. From the Manufacturers: list, select Microsoft.
  5. From the Network Clients: list, select Client for Microsoft Networks.
  6. Click the OK button.
Create a New Dial-Up Networking Connection
  1. Double-click the My Computer icon.
  2. Double-click the Dial-Up Networking folder.
  3. Double-click the Make New Connection icon.
  4. Under Type a name for the computer you are dialing, type Intransnet
  5. Click the Configure button.
  6. Check that the appropriate speed for your modem (for 14.4 modems use 19200, for 28.8 modems use 38400 and for 33.6 and 56K modems, use 57600.)
  7. Make sure that Only connect at this speed is not checked.
  8. Click the OK button.

  9. Click the Next button.
  10. In the Telephone number text box, type your local Intransnet access number. And select blank for the Area code. Remember to check with your local telephone company to make sure that the number you choose is a local toll-free call.
  11. Click the Next button.
  12. Click the Finish button.
  13. Click the Intransnet icon.
  14. From the menu bar, click File and select Properties.
  15. Click the Server Type button.

  16. For Type of Dial-Up Server, select PPP: Windows 95, Windows NT 3.5, Internet.
  17. Uncheck Log on to network.
  18. Check Enable software compression.
  19. Uncheck Require encrypted password.
  20. Uncheck NetBEUI.
  21. Uncheck IPX/SPX Compatible.
  22. Click the OK button.
  23. Click the OK button to close the window.
